The following newspaper excerpt (dated 11.11.1942) describes why Winzer received the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberst Willy Winzer… and his Grenadier-Regiment were able to achieve a penetration into the northern part of the Stalingrad tractor factory during mid-October. After this he [Winzer] pushed forwards in a thrust that reached the Volga River despite the presence of bitter enemy resistance. Two days later this brave regimental commander died at the head of his Grenadiers during the battle for the gun factory.”
