Water-Point Bailén

From this water-point (noria), near the centre of the battlefield, water was brought to the soldiers.
Maria Bellido, resident of Bailén, took part to the Battle of Bailén, on 19 July 1808, by bringing water to the Spanish soldiers. A bullet fractured the jar of water she was taking to General Castaños, Commander-in-Chief. Undeterred, she went on and brought him the little water left in the debris of the jar.
Bailén's Coat of Arms features a holed jar in remembrance of this act of bravery.
