Commonwealth War Grave General Cemetery Zuidlaren

The General Cemetery of Zuidlaren contains one Commonwealth burial. This casualty is Leslie Gordon Fowler. Fowler is awarded with a DFC 'Distinguished Flying Cross' award. On February 24th 1945 at 1715 departed in Norfolk (England) with 74 other aicraft, a Fortess III HB805 of the R.A.F. (this is a American Boeing B17 Flying Fortress, used by the Royal Air Force). There mission was 'sweep over the river Ruhr'. During this mission several targets near the river Ruhr were attacked. Around 2010 this B17 was the first aircraft that was hit by night-fighter Kurt Matzak, in the surrounding of Dusseldorf. One engine got fire and the aircraft crashed in Niersen (Germany). Fowler survived the crash and was taken POW 'Prisoner Of War'. He died almost 3 weeks later in the hospital of Zuidlaren due to his injuries.
