Dutch War Graves Leuven

The Communal Cemetery in Leuven contains a small Dutch Field of honour with two Dutch war victims. These are two Dutch soldiers of the 'Prinses Irene Brigade' .

On September 6th 1944 some scout and armed vehicles of the Prinses Irene Brigade drove from the liberated Leuven to Diest. The vehicles drove in to a German ambush at Sint Joris Winge. During the five hours lasting battle three Dutch soldiers were killed. The first one was Henk de Groot, he drove in one of the first scoutcars that got under heavy enemyfire. He died instantly, Henk was buried on the churchyard of Sint Joris Winge and was later reburied on the Dutch Field of Honour in Loenen.
A moment later motorbikedriver and soldier Anthoon Bonte got under enemy artilleryfire and was servere wounded. Also soldier Anton Boonte got servere wounded after he drove in to a landmine. Both men died later due their servere wounds and are buried on this cemetery.
