Festung Königsberg - Fort III "Friedrich Wilhelm I"

This 19th century fortification was part of the Königsberg fortress and was used as Gestapo prison in 1933 and became one of the German strongpoints during the battle of Königsberg.

Gestapo prison:
It was established in January 1933 to lock up many members of the SPD and KPD. The living conditions were terrible and inmates were also tortured. The prison was closed in autumn of 1933.

1945:
During the battle of Königsberg, the fort was held by soldiers of the 367th Infanterie Division. It was taken by the Red Army on 7 April 1945 after heavy fighting.

Today:
It is currently abandoned.
