German-Russian War Cemetery Gadka Stara

The Gadka Stara war cemetery for 2000 fallen German and Russian soldiers of the First World War contains an unusual mass grave with the remains of 9 German soldiers who fell near Lódz in 1939. The last sentence on the grave stone reads:

"SIE STARBEN FOR GROSSDEUTSCHLAND AM 8 SEPTEMBER 1939"

("THEY FELL FOR GREATER GERMANY ON 8 SEPTEMBER 1939")

"Großdeutschland" was the official name of the Germany Reich from 1938 to 1943.
