Centre de la Mémoire d'Oradour

The Oradour-sur-Glane massacre took place on June 10, 1944 in the French town of Oradour-sur-Glane. That day the village was surrounded by the 1st regiment 'Der Führer' of the SS panzer division 'Das Reich' and eventually destroyed. 642 people were killed in this robbery. Only six people survived the massacre.

Center de la Memoire at the entrance of the village, a museum has been set up since 1999, the Center de la Memoire. It is an underground museum.
The museum shows the whole story in word, image and sound. There is a Dutch audio guide available and clearly explains the visit to the museum.

Those who pass the exit of the museum come above ground in the middle of the village. There, all the ruins are still in the state they were after the destruction. Small plaques on the houses indicate whether a shop, barber shop, garage or clothing workshop was located there. Everything has been left as it was left on the fatal day, including the doctor's car, which is still in the village square.

The visit ends in a souvenir shop where books and DVDs are for sale.

For current visiting hours, please visit the website of the museum.
