Trench and Rifle Pit Dehesa de Navalcarbón

The Madrid front was stabilized, broadly speaking, at the beginning of 1937. From the passes of Somosierra, to the north, to Algodor, to the south, the positions of both sides followed each other, forming a line of about three hundred kilometers that was gradually fortified , first with trenches and barbed wire and later with concrete fortifications, which today constitute the most spectacular visible remains of the conflict. Tens of thousands of men lived for three years in the harsh conditions imposed by modern warfare.
