Commonwealth War Graves Mataró

At the Cemetery in Mataró are five Commonwealth war graves. They are of an Australian crew of a American B-26 Marauder type II. The plane of the 14th squadron of the RAF was based on the island of Corsica. From the island, during World War II bombing raids were carried out along the coast of Spain at the height of Barcelona. The Germans transported in that period the material Wolfram from Spain to France to make weapons. Because this material was important to produce weapons the ships were a major attack target for the Allies.
Around 11.00 in the morning the plane flew low over the Mataró, for unknown reasons the unit was in trouble and crashed into the sea. The bodies of the deceased crew members were taken from the sea with fishing boats. All the bodies were identified and one day later buried at the cemetery in Mataró.
Of the six headed crew, five were found, the sixth crew member was missing. These five men are buried in this cemetery:
