In August 1942, between 1,000-2,000 Jews from Łomazy were executed by men of the German 101st reserve police battalion, aided by Ukrainian Hilfswillige, or Trawnikis. This mass murder was described by Christopher Browning in his book Ordinary Men. The bodies of the victims were transferred to this cemetery after the war from the mass grave about 2.5 kilometres away. They were buried anonymously, without headstones.
