Memorial Martin Linge

Vestre Gravlund Oslo

Memorial
Martin Jensen Linge, DSC (11 December 1894 – 27 December 1941) was an actor and officer. He lead Norwegian Independent Company 1 (more commonly known as Kompani Linge), a Special Operations Executive unit formed in 1941 from Norwegian volunteers.
As a conscripted lieutenant, Martin Linge participated in the Norway campaign in April 1940, including in the battles of Åndalsnes. After he was wounded, he was evacuated to Britain at the end of April 1940. In the same year, he became involved in the recruitment and building up of a Norwegian network in connection with the British SOE (Special Operations Executive), with the aim of sabotage, obstruction, guerrillas and subversion behind enemy lines.
The work resulted in, among other things, Norwegian Independent Company No. 1, a British military unit consisting of Norwegian volunteers under SOE, later known as Kompani Linge. Martin Linge was the company's first commander.
In March 1941, Linge led a small Norwegian force that, together with British units, landed at Stamsund and Svolvær in Lofoten (known as the Svolvær raid). During the so-called Måløy raid in December 1941, also led by Linge himself, he was shot dead on the steps of Ulvesund Hotel in Måløy.
