Former Fort Geldersoord

Fort Geldersoord was located in the southwest of Westervoort along the Rhine on a Gelderland peninsula in what was then Prussian territory.
The Fort was a defense structure for the inlet lock, which could let in water from the Rhine to flood the area behind it between Westervoort and Doesburg.
The Fort was constructed in 1741-1742, due to imminent danger to Prussian or French troops.
In the Vienna Congress in 1815 (after Napoleon), the Prussian areas, Duiven, Huissen and Zevenaar became part of the Netherlands due to border changes. The Fort lost its purpose and was sold and had to be demolished.
