From 1939 to May 1940, this house housed the headquarters of the Dutch 1st Battalion 26th Infantry Regiment under commander Major E.P. Weber.
This was one of the two battalions assigned the task of defending the Maas-Waal Canal. The line along the Maas-Waal Canal was intended for a short-term defense to slow down the enemy's advance. The army leadership hoped to be able to hold off the enemy at the Maas-Waal Canal for at least 12 to 24 hours.
