Nebo Monastery

During the Second World War, the Nebo Monastery in Heilig Landstichting, near Nijmegen, was requisitioned by the German Wehrmacht. Later, the Allies also used the monastery temporarily. The priests and seminarians had to leave the building and were housed elsewhere.

In the vicinity of the monastery, along the Nijmeegsebaan, there was a temporary cemetery in 1944. British soldiers who died in the heavy fighting around the Waal Bridge, such as the Grenadier Guards, were buried here.

During the liberation of Nijmegen, the area was badly damaged, including church towers near the Nebo Monastery. After the war, the cemetery disappeared, but an information board still marks the spot. The monastery was later restored and used again as a gymnasium and seminary.
