Lindesnes Fort

Around the area of the old Lindesnes lighthouse, at the southernmost tip of Norway, the Germans built a series of fortifications, underground tunnels and bunkers during the Second World War. At its peak, this “Fort Lindesnes” housed hundreds of troops, four heavy guns and a radar installation. The cannons were moved to another location at the end of 1943, but the fort remained in use as a radar and lookout post.

Part of the bunkers and tunnels are accessible, and there is an exhibition about the sinking of the MS Palatina. This ship, with approximately 900 Russian prisoners of war on board, was torpedoed on 21 October 1942, killing all the prisoners and the entire crew. There is a monument near the lighthouse in memory of this catastrophe.
