Former HMS Pembroke Chatham

The Royal Navy Barracks, Chatham, also known as HMS Pembroke was built in 1902 on the site of a former prison to replace the hulks (known as Pembroke) that were used as accommodation in the dockyard. Similar barracks were also built in the the other two manning ports, Devonport and Portsmouth.
The site became the accommodation for the Chatham Division also providing recreational facilities until 1956 when central manning was introduced. In 1961 it became home to the Royal Navy Supply Schools training ratings as cooks, writers, stewards, stores accountants and catering accountants. The school closed in 1984 along with the dockyard as part of defence cuts and restructuring.
Now the site and many original buildings are used by the Universities at Medway.
