In December 2004, a memorial was placed at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Sainlez for the civilian victims who lost their lives during the winter of 1944-45.
The population of Sainlez was particularly hard hit during the Battle of the Bulge. During the Christmas bombings, 29 civilians, including many children, were killed.
A copper plaque bears the following inscription:
"During and after the fierce fighting in the winter of 1944-45, more than 40 civilians, including 14 from Marvie, lost their lives in this parish.
During this final offensive, some 2,500 civilians were killed in the Ardennes between December 16, 1944, and January 28, 1945.
To commemorate the suffering and sacrifices of all these people, the residents of Sainlez, Honville, and Livarchamps wanted to erect this monument.
"To our loved ones whom the cruel war has taken from us,
may your memory brighten our lives here."
