Commonwealth War Grave Merkplas

At the General Cemetery in Merksplas is one Commonwealth War Grave, it is the grave of Pilot Officer John Thould of the 263 Squadron of the RAF.
Around September-October 1944 the front line was in this area. Digging ditches by locals to protect trees against diseases was logically seen as digging trenches. Nine Typhoons from the Deurne airfield attacked the area. Thould's plane was hit by German flak and crashed at the hamlet of Staakheuvel
