Memorials Townhall Delfzijl

Text on the plaque:
'IN COMMEMORATION OF
THE LIBERATION OF DELFZIJL
MAY 1945
THE CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDERS
5TH CANADIAN ARMOURED DIVISION'.

There are also other plaques, for the hamlets around Delfzijl and one plaque for the residents who died in the fights.

In the Townhall of Delfzijl hangs recently a new liberation plaque of Delfzijl. The plaque is a tribute to Regiments who liberated Delfzijl. On the 4th of May 2013 the municipality of Delfzijl have appointed posthumously 5 Canadian former commanders to become honorary citizens.

The Lieutenant Colonels in case are:
J.W. Eaton, commander of the 8th New Brunswick Hussars;
L.H.C. Payne, commander of the Irish Regiment of Canada;
A.S. Gregory, commander of the Regina Rifle Regiment;
G.C. Corbould, commander of the Royal Westminster Regiment
L.S. Henderson, commander of the Canadian Scottish Regiment.

Earlier in November 1945, two other Lieutenant Colonels M.W. Andrew, commander of the Perth Regiment of Canada and R.B. Sommerville, commander of the Cape Breton Highlanders were already appointed to become honorary citizens.

The seven regimental commanders have all played an important rol in the liberation of Delfzijl in the final days of World War Two. The plaque is located in the hall of the (former) town hall close to other memorial plaques.

Another plaque is dedicated to the help offered by the residents of Delfzijl to the survivors of concentration camp "Schwartzer Weg" in Wilhelmshafen (Germany), on 16 April 1945.
