Stumbling Stone Jáchymova 4/27

This small, brass memorial plaque (Stolperstein or stumbling stone) commemorates:

* Max Eckstein, born 1896, deported 1941 to Lodz, murdered.

The address for this stolperstein is not clear. Different sources say Jachymova 47, Jachymova 4/27, or Jachymova 63/3.

Little information was found about Max Eckstein. He was born in Libechov, about 36 km north of Prague. He was the fifth of eight children of Ferdinand and Julie Eckstein. On a passport application in the 1920s, he was not married.

His last known address where he was registered before he was deported was Regnartova 4 in Praha I. (Regnartova was the name the German occupiers gave to Jachymova.)

Max Eckstein’s name was on a list of Lodz Ghetto inhabitants, and www.holocaust.cz states that he was deported from Prague on Transport C on 26 October 1941 to Lodz. The 1000 deportees were in passenger cars with the windows painted black. They did not know their destination other than resettlement in the east. After they arrived, from 16 January to 12 September 1942, many Lodz Ghetto Jews were deported onward to the Chelmno extermination camp. Others from the ghetto were taken to labor camps. Only 51 Jews from Transport C are known to have survived the war. Max Eckstein was not among them.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth, and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
