The plaque in the courtyard of the Fortress of Sedan commemorates the internment camp "le Bagne," where up to 5,200 civilians were sentenced to forced labor for, among other things, resistance to the German regime. The exact number is unknown, but at least 1,000 died from abuse, exhaustion, and malnutrition. It also commemorates the deportations of 180,000 deportees from the occupied zones to Germany, the 30,000 dead, and the 8,000 executed between 1914 and 1918. At the bottom, the quotation reads: "Let us erase hatred, but let us preserve the memory."
