Stumbling Stones Coesfelder Straße 25

These memorial stones (sStolpersteine or stumbling blocks) commemorate:
* Adolf de Jong, born 1882, fled in 1938 to Holland, murdered 17 September 1943 in Auschwitz.
* Frieda de Jong née Devries, born 1889, fled in 1938 to Holland, survived in Australia.
* Marga de Jong, born 1922, fled in 1939 to Holland, survived in Australia.
* Herbert de Jong, born 1923, fled in 1938 to Holland, murdered March 1944 in Auschwitz.
* Henny de Jong, born 1926, fled in 1938 to Holland, murdered 17 September 1943 in Auschwitz.

Adolph de Jong and Frieda Devries married and had 3 children -- Marga, Herbert and Henny. Frieda and Marga went first to Holland and then on to Australia, where Frieda died at age 75 and where Marga died at age 85.

Adolf De Jong was held in Westerbork from March 1940 until 14 September 1943, when he was deported to Auschwitz. He was killed there 3 days later.

After living in Winterswijk, Netherlands, Herbert de Jong was imprisoned in Westerbork from November 1942 until 14 September 1943, when he was deported to Auschwitz and killed 3 days later at age 20.

Henny (Henriette) was taken from an orphanage in Arnhem and killed in Auschwitz at age 16.

The small brass plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were persecuted or murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities and villages, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
