Memorial Massacre Ležáky

On 24 June 1942, two weeks after the massacre of Lidice, over 500 armed Germans surrounded Ležáky. 32 villagers (both men and women) were taken away, shot and burned in local crematorium. Two of the children were selected for the 'Aryanisation' programme (both were found and returned after the war), the remaining 11 were gassed in the concentration camp Chelmno.

The village was set on fire and later on the remains of Ležáky were pulled down. Ležáky was not rebuilt after the war. Nowadays there is a memorial and the shape of the former houses can be seen.
