The Windmill

The Windmill of Eerde was destroyed on 24th September 1944 during "The battle of the Sanddunes". On the mill there are plaques with the names of the fallen.

In this windmill Jacob H. Wingard ("Pennsylvania sgt 501 prcht inf abn div.") was killed on Monday September 18, 1944 at about eleven o'clock in the morning. He is buried on the Margraten American Cemetery and Memorial.

Between the windmill and the house a British Sherman tank was knocked out during the fight on Sunday September 24, 1944. In that tank were 3 British soldiers, all killed. They rest at the cemetary of Eerde.

On the 17th of september 2014 a small museum was opened in the mill. Next to the mill there is also a memorial for the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment.
