Dutch War Graves Cemetery Complex Achterweg Culemborg

In Culemborg, a number of cemeteries are situated together on the road Achterweg. The cemeteries lie against each other and form a complex of cemeteries. They are separated from each other by planting. On some sections of the cemetery complex are war graves, all dating from the Second World War. There are also some monuments erected in memory of the victims of this war.

The complex consists of:

General cemetery
Old Reformed Cemetery
New reformed cemetery
Roman Catholic cemetery
Old Catholic cemetery
Jewish cemetery
Muslim cemetery

Culemborg Old Protestant section contains the grave of Maria Hendrika Bonhof-van Heusden.

At the age of 46, she was killed on 14 may 1940 when German soldiers shot at a truck carrying refugees near the bridge of Ravenswaay. The Germans were afraid that the truck transported Dutch soldiers who wanted to destroy the bridge.

Culemborg New Roman-Catholic section contains the war grave of Dirk Johannes Geurts. He was a forced labourer and died in Hamburg-Bergedorf, on 19 September 1944.
