Grave Walter Benjamin Cemetery Portbou

This is the grave of Walter Benjamin. He was a well-known philosopher and writer. Because he was Jewish, he fled from Germany to France in 1933. On 27 September 1940 he ended his own life in Portbou at the French-Spanish border because he was about to be send to the Gestapo.

The Cemetery also contains a memorial to honor him.
