Memorial Maria Gräfin von Maltzan

This plaque commemorates countess Maria Gräfin von Maltzan (1990 – 1997), who lived here during the Second World War. From 1942 to 1945, she hided several Jews, among whom her friend and future husband Hans Hirschel, and other fugitives in her house. She also helped Jews to escape out of Germany, in coörperation with resistance groups and the Swedish Church in Berlin. In the meantime, she studied to become a veterinarian, and completed her education during the war. After the war, she had her own practice elsewhere in Berlin.

In 1987 she was awarded by Yad Vashem as Righteous among the Nations.
