Stumbling Stones Fährstraße 10-12

These memorial stones (so called Stolpersteine or stumbling blocks) commemorate:

Jakob Lion, year of birth 1865, deported 1942 Theresienstadt, murdered in Treblinka
Bertha Lion: year of birth 1861, deported 1942, Theresienstadt, murdered in Treblinka
Max Lion: year of birth 1905, deported 1941 Riga, murdered 13-3-1945 KZ Slaspils
Hedwig Lion: year of birth 1932, deported 1941 and murdered November 1943 in Riga
Elisabeth Lion: year of birth 1909, deported 1941 Riga, liberated, survived
Johanna Sanders: year 1887, deported Theresienstadt, murdered in Auschwitz

The small brass plaques of 10 by 10 cm, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were persecuted or murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities and villages, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
