Gettysburg National Cemetery

The National Cemeteries in the U.S.A. are used for graves of war dead, graves of U.S. military personnel, veterans and their spouses but not exclusively so. There are also special state veteran cemeteries.

Gettysburg National Cemetery (Soldiers' National Cemetery) was opened in the American Civil War for Union victims of the Battle of Gettysburg. In 2008, there were in total over 6,000 graves on this cemetery. Of these, 3,512 are from the Civil War, including the graves of 979 unknowns and 850 World War II dead were reinterred from European and South Pacific theaters.
