On the night of 16 on 17 May, 1943 the Möhne-, Eder- and Sorphe dam were bombed by 19 bombers of the Royal Air Force. The bombers, part of the No. 617 Squadron under command of Guy Gibson, were performed with purpose-developed bouncing bombs (Upkeeps). The Möhne- and Ederdam were broken, resulting in a massive destruction of local villages and factories. Some 1,300 people lost their lives.

This route has a number of interesting sites that deal with Operation Chastise, better known as the Dambusters. The dams can visit but also for example the grave of Guy Gibson, which has its final resting place in the Dutch village Steenbergen.

The structure of the route is as much as possible, placed in the order of the operation itself. We start at the RAF base where the operation began. It is obviously impossible to follow the route in this way by car but you can take out the pieces that appeal to you or where you are able to follow this. The dams and the museum can be visited by car in one day. The various cemeteries, all in the Netherlands or Germany are not all close to each other. Apart from Rheinberg and Reichswald Forest, which are only a few dozen kilometers away from each other and are both on the way to the Netherlands, along the German motorway A57.
