Biography

René Boillet was born as the extramarital son of the sixteen year old France Soudan.
Boillet was imprisoned in 1940 and escaped in 1941. He was appointed as teacher in Saint-Alvère (Dordogne) and became departmental leader of the Secret Army in the Dordogne, under his pseudonym Gisèle. All the heads of the Secret Army in the Dordogne had been given female pseudonyms.
On July 26, 1944, he organized the attack on the Bank of France train in Neuvic-sur-Isle.
When the FFI was created in the summer of 1944, he became one of the two heads of department, along with FTP commander Ranoux (pseudonym Hercule). As lieutenant-colonel of the Forces Interior France (FFI), he was promoted to major on 1 January 1949.
René Boillet was a candidate in the municipal elections of October 1947 in Périgueux, on behalf of the SFIO, led by the outgoing mayor Pierre Pugnet. This party had only four elected members, including René Boillet. He did not stand for re-election in 1953.

Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Lieutenant-Colonel
Unit:
Forces Françaises de l'Intérieur
Citation:
"This French officer played an outstanding part throughout the War in Europe in organising resistance in South-West France and was primarily responsible for forming the "Corps France" of the DORDOGNE, which proved itself to be the most able and fearless maquis force in that department.
He worked in the closest co-operation with a British Liaison Officer, whose directions he accepted without reserve and carried out with the utmost loyalty and devotion.

After D-Day, Lt.Colonel BOILLET was appointed Commander of the F.F.I. in the Dordogne.
He had 10,000 men under his command, whom he led in a number of engagements against the enemy. He showed the highest courage in action and a complete disregard for his own safety, notably in a large-scale action at St. ASTIER, near PERIGUEUX on the 19th August 1944, where his superb leadership saved the maquis forces from a severe defeat at the hands of a superior enemy force.

Lt.Colonel BOILLET set a fine example to his own men and to other resistance leaders, not only of gallantry and devotion to duty, but also of sincere loyalty to France's allies, and friendship and admiration for Great Britain. He merits high recognition for his outstamding services to the Allied cause, and it is recommended that he be appointed a Companion in the Distinguished Service Order."
