Action:
On 15.08.1942 the Soviets launched an attack against the north wing of the 5. Panzer-Division with infantry, artillery support and 20 tanks. They managed to break through at Gredjakino. However Major Schemmel launched a counterattack that resolved the situation. During the battle he was wounded in the left forearm and hand. In recognition of his efforts on this day Schemmel would receive the Knight’s Cross.
