At the start of December 1942 Göller commanded a Kampfgruppe that was tasked with defending the village of Tschertkowo (located near Millerowo). Despite the difficult circumstances Göller and his men were able to fight a successful defensive action alongside other such islands of resistance that bought vital time for additional German reinforcements to arrive while also preventing the Soviets from cutting off Heeresgruppe A in the Caucasus. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross as a result.
