This black granite monument commemorates the victims of the Allied bombing of Fougères on 6, 7 and 9 June 1944.
Fougères was bombed several times by the Allies in June 1944 as part of the campaign to disrupt the supply of German reinforcements after the Normandy landings (D-Day) on 6 June. The attack on the town on 9 June in particular destroyed the railway station and damaged more than 400 buildings. A total of around 300 people lost their lives as a result of the bombings.
The monument bears the names of the victims and the text:
'En hommage aux membres de la défense passive et à la memoire des victimes des bombardements allies sur Fougeres les 6,8 et 9 juin 1944.'
(In tribute to the members of the passive resistance and in memory of the victims of the Allied bombings on Fougères on 6, 8 and 9 June 1944).
