French War Graves Chalon-sur-Saône

The Western Cemetery in Chalon-sur-Saône contains four fields of French war graves. The grave markers are in the form of a decorated metal sword with a French War Cross. Some graves clearly date from the First World War and bear a name and military unit, while others only bear a name and year that cannot be immediately linked to military conflict.

In the middle of the crosses are two monuments. One is dedicated to those missing from the First and Second World Wars. The other monument reads: “in memory of the 360 French soldiers who died in the ambulances of Chalon-sur-Saône during the war of 1870-1871”.
