Krzyz za Wolnosc i Niepodleglosc

The silver metal cross measures 42 x 42 mm and has rounded arm bases. In the middle of the cross is a crowned Polish eagle (there exist early exemples without an eagle) surrounded by a ring of barbed wire. The arms bear the inscription RP / ZA : WOLNOSC I : NIEPODLEGLOSC 1. IX / 1939 (Polish Republic for freedom and independence September 1st 1939). The reverse is blank. British made exemples bear the crossed swords on the ribbon, the later Polish made exemples bear the crossed swords as a linking between the cross and the ribbon. The 36 mm wide ribbon is coloured in white with claret-black-claret side stripes. The later Polish made decorations, the claret stripes have been replaced by red ones.
