On February 21st, 1914 the crown of Albania was given by the 18 districts to Wilhelm zu Wied. Although he was adressed by foreign nations as prince, in Albania he was called Mbret which is to be seen as King. Wilhelm and his family entered Albania in Durrës under the protection of Dutch Gendermes. Wilhelm however never succeeded in gaining authority in the country and when World War 1 started he did not receive any help form any nation. He left the country on September 3rd, 1914 to never return to it again.
The Principality of Albania effectively came to an end on September 7, 1914, when Ehli Kijam forces overran Durrës, the government's last stronghold, just four days after Prince Wilhelm's departure. In the years that followed, Albania experienced a series of provisional governments, culminating in Ahmet Zogu's formal abolition of the monarchy in 1925.
Between 1920 and 1925, a High Council acted on behalf of Prince Wilhelm of Wied, who despite having fled the country on 3 September 1914, was still considered legally the head of the Albanian State.
