23 0830 Assumed command 121 Town Major, Major C.W.S. Branch RA (Field) former commander killed in motor accidennt HEESCH Holland M.R. 4951 – Sheet 2A + 3A. 121 Town Major under command HQ L of C, through HQ 12 L of C Area and 21 L of C sub area; There is no hand over to mee. Maj. Bert […] is lent by 21 L of C pending my arrival. He is as much a stranger to the office as I am. We both realise the organisation of the unit leaves much to be desired. The staff is up to WE only British member is L/Sgt Owen Clerk, remained English speaking Dutch. The staff it appears have not at any time been “in the picture”, they say they were never informed of what was happening.
HELMOND 23   121 Town Major was formed 12 March 1944; This will be the first War Diary ever to have been submitted. Funeral to Mil Cemetery Helmond of Maj Branch.
24 1000 Submit request to 21 L of C Sub Area for replacement of transport destroyed in accident, contact by telephone AQ 21 L of C. Unable to make personal contact no transport.
24 1100 Visit HQ 12 L of C Area HELMOND meet A+Q Staffs
24 1400 Visit two large requistioned textile factories in the town.
25 0900 Meet Burgomaster HELMOND + heads of civilian services
26 0900 Meet OC Troosp HELMOND + Commanders of major units
26 1400 Meet Civil Affairs + chief of Civil Police
27 0900 Meet rival factory owners with a view to derequisitioning their premises (HELMOND is textile Centre)

29 0900 Visit GELDROP, village in area to find additional accomodation for […] located there + hand back to civilian authorities two schools. Still no unit transport, have only on one occasion for 3 hours been able to borrow tpt from 12 L of C Area HQ. Impossible to find out what is happening in outlying parts of area circumference approx. 60 miles.
30 0900 Routine Duties.
31 1000 Arrange to have local airfield surveyed.
