Major Japanese counterattack conducted on 24 and 25 August 1942 by Navy and Army commanded by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto with the ultimate goal of recapturing the American-occupied islands of Guadalcanal and Tulagi. Also known as the Naval Battle of the Eastern Solomon Islands. The outcome was a clear American strategic and tactical victory.
