Biography

Wilton was born on May 30 1920 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the son of Fredrick Wesley Hill and Beatrice Hill nee Butterworth (English) of Saskatoon. He had two sisters.

He was an apprentice in a drug store and member of the United Church. He spoke English fluently and Latin indifferently. His sports were tennis, swimming, softball and hockey and his hobby was motorcycling.
He enlisted on July 30 1941 in Saskatoon and he went thereafter on September 1 1942 overseas to the UK.

Wilton was killed in action on Thursday May 13 1943 age 22, just 17 days before his 23rd birthday due to a crash near Rossum before or ager an attack on Pilsen in Czechoslovakia. He was buried on May 15 1943 then in Rossum. The other fallen RCAF crew member was WO II Douglas S. Mitchell age 21 in grave 6 and the other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew members were Sgt Francis J. Howell age 22 in grave 3, Sgt Duncan Grey age 22 in grave 7, Sgt Ernest G.R. Beacham age 20 in grave 5, Sgt Robert W. Littlefair in grave 2 and Sgt Leslie A. Dunmore age 19 in grave 6.

He was awarded on July 31 1942 the Air Navigator’s Badge.

He and the other fallen crew members are mentioned since March 2020 at an information sign near the crash site on the occasion of 75 years of Freedom.

He served with the 106 (R.A.F.) Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
