Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Capitaine (Captain)
Unit:
Jedburgh Team Gilbert, Special Operations Executive (SOE), British Government
Recommendation:
"This French officer was parachuted near Quimper in Brittany, on 8th July 1944 with a mission to organise resistance in S.W. Finisterre.

At great risk he moved about the country in a civilian car, and made contact with all the agents and resistance leaders in the area, co-ordinating their work, supplying them with arms, and preventing friction and jealousy by his own example.

From August 3rd to Sept. 1st this officer in conjunction with his British colleagues, personally directed the operations against the german garrison in the Quimper peninsular, and was mainly responsible for containing this force until the arrival of units from the 3rd Army.

On several occasions during this period, he arranged ambushes of german columns, inflicting heavy casulaties on the Germans with small loss to his own force.

On August 8th he took a leading part in an ambush against a strong German attempt to break out towards Brest. In a battle which lasted over 7 hours Capt. de la Carliere played a conspicuous part. The enemy losses on this occasion were over 60 dead and 100 prisoners as well as 21 lorries burnt or captured intact.

On the arrival of the advance elements of the 3rd American Army, he carried out the necessary liaison between the F.F.I. and the Americans with great tact and ability.

His British colleague speaks most highly of his courage, cooperation and loyalty at all times.

I recommend therefore that this officer be awarded the M.C."
