Biography

Flight Officer RCAF, pilot, 97 Squadron RAF.

Killed in action on 17 December 1942 when his Lancaster ED333 was attacked by a German night fighter during a mission to Neustadtam Rübenberge and crashed in Tollebeek, now part of the municipality of Urk in the Noordoostpolder. Leonard Thorneycroft's body was found immediately after the crash and buried at the Nieuwe Ooster Cemetery in Amsterdam. The crash site is marked by a memorial pole. More than a kilometre away, the crew is commemorated by a monument in the new Zeeheldenwijk neighbourhood, where streets are also named after the crew.
