Biography

Jacobus Meijer, pseudonym Koos, skipper by profession and owner of a barge, initially did reconnaissance work in the Alblasserwaard. He was the one who, together with Jan Visser, established the route Sliedrecht - Lage Zwaluwe. This connecting line served to transmit messages for the Dutch Bureau of Intelligence. Also hundreds of people including Allied pilots or soldiers left behind after the Battle of Arnhem were also transferred there. On the way back, they took food and medicines (especially Insulin) that were urgently needed. As a line-crosser himself, he undertook this route 29 times.

On the night of 4-2-1945, together with Jan Visser, General John Hackett and Divisional Doctor Greame Warrack, who had been brought to Sliedrecht by the resistance after the failed Operation Market Garden, he crossed to Lage Zwaluwe by canoe.
