Biography

Relatively little is known about Pieter van Dam from Hardinxveld and bearer of the Bronze Lion. Somewhere around December 1944 he joined the group of line-crossers who used rowing boats and canoes to bring people and messages through the front lines to liberated areas. It is likely that he was also active in the resistance before that. He made a total of 15 crossings and it is known that he experienced precarious moments when they were shot at and had to swim to safety.

Pieter van Dam was awarded the Bronze Lion on August 30, 1948, which was pinned on him by Prince Bernhard on July 14, 1949.
