Biography

Ernie Vile was brought up the eldest of four in the village of Creech St Michael (Somerset).
It must have been in 1943 or 1944 that he joined the 7th Bn. Seaforth Highlanders.
In late September in Holand the Seaforths tried to liberate the town of Best in Holland which was only a week or so after American forces during Operation Market Garden tried to capture the town.

It was on the 26th of September 1944 that Ernie Vile was killed during a fierce battle with Germans who were defending their positions at the railway track and the brick factory “De Leeuwerik”.

Initially his field grave was near the factory, later being moved to Mierlo Cemetery.
