Attack on January 17, 1945
The German occupying forces crossed regularly and attempted to land. They were often used to conduct reconnaissance. On the evening of January 17, 1945, six German soldiers crossed from Schouwen-Duiveland towards the Grote Nol and took up positions behind the seawall. A British patrol (H Troop, 247th Battery) arrived at the Grote Nol around 10:30 p.m. and was ambushed by the Germans. Three British soldiers were shot dead, and one managed to escape and raise the alarm. The Germans were nowhere to be found. Their bodies were later found in the ditch.

They were Victor S. Rapley, John L. Brown, and Edward Callan.
