Biography

Pilot Officer
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
266 Sqdn.

Padraig was born in 1924. Padraig was a traditional family name in his Irish family. His nickname was Paddy.
Padraig was well-liked by his fellow students. He played cricket and joined the cadet corps.
In 1942, he was accepted for pilot training at the South Rhodesian training school for the RAF.
After completing basic training in Bulawayo, Padraig was assigned to the basic flying school at Belvedere Field in Salisbury in September 1942. From there, he moved to Cranborne, where he earned his wings in February 1943. He was then seconded to England as a sergeant pilot in May 1943. It is unclear when he was assigned to 266 (Rhodesia) Squadron.
The squadron became part of Second Tactical Air Force and joined No. 146 Wing in March 1944. This was a Royal Air Force formation during World War II, which among other things supported the landings in Normandy in June 1944.
At some point after his assignment to 266 Squadron, Padraig was promoted to Pilot Officer. Unfortunately, he was killed in a flying accident when he took off from a forward airfield in the Netherlands on 26 March 1945, six weeks before the end of the war in Europe.
