Flight Lieutenant
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Oliver worked in the administration department at the head office of Consett Iron Company before joining the army and training as a pilot.
The squadrons of 125 Wing, of which Oliver Lee is a member, carry out their patrol flights from B86, a small airfield near Le Culot in Belgium, 50 km south of Brussels.
On 30 September, the Group Captain of 125 Wing arranges for his men to find accommodation near Grave. On 2 October, the ground crew arrives from Culot by road.
During a German attack, bombs from six Me-262s hit the 125 Wing side of the runway. Apparently, 125 Wing had not received any warning and was taken by surprise, leaving 25 soldiers wounded, some seriously.
Two of them died in the emergency hospital in Grave, including 34-year-old Flight Lieutenant Oliver Lee (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), adjutant to the commander of 125 Wing.
