Biography

Sergeant. No. 9 Squadron RAF. Navigator. Munro is the son of Wing Commander Donald McKenzie and Ethel Margaret McKenzie (née Rice) from Vere Walk, Watford, Hertfordshire. He received a scholarship to Queen's College, Cambridge.

Killed in action when his Lancaster W4159 was hit by a German night fighter during a mission to Duisburg and crashed near the Hackfort in Vorden. The entire crew was killed and is buried in the General Cemetery in Vorden.

There is a memorial at the site of the crash. In 2022, Omkijkpunt published the book “De 20 geallieerde gezichten van Vorden” (The 20 Allied Faces of Vorden). This book tells the stories of the 20 Allied soldiers buried in Vorden, including that of Munro McKenzie.
