Biography

Sergeant. No. 9 Squadron RAF, air gunner/radio operator. Son of George Mitchell and Elizabeth Michell (née Patterson) from Fulwell Co. Durham. Husband of Ellen Mitchell (née Rutter).

Killed in action during a mission to Duisburg when his Lancaster W4159 was hit by a German night fighter and crashed in the vicinity of Hackfort near Vorden. The entire crew was killed and is buried in the General Cemetery in Vorden.

There is a memorial at the site of the crash. In 2022, Omkijkpunt published the book “De 20 geallieerde gezichten van Vorden” (The 20 Allied Faces of Vorden). This book tells the stories of the 20 Allied soldiers buried in Vorden, including that of George Mitchell.
